The story of HMS Amethyst which was ploghing through the murky waters of China's Yangtse River on a routine mission to Nanking in 1949 when - without warning and without provocation - she was fired on again and again by the massed heavy guns of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Before the shooting stopped, 23 of the 183 men aboard were dead or dying and 31 were wounded. . And this was only the beginning of the Yangtse Incident.
