Leaving London behind him, the author bought some land at South Gorley, on the edge of the New Forest and converted a tumbled down cottage the Cuckoo Hill into his ideal house over 5 yrs. The archaeology and nature and life ofthe area exercised such a fascination over him that he embarked upon a remarkable private record of what is now a vanished world, handwritten and lavishly illustrated with his own superb watercolours.
